Definition:

The provider has adequate knowledge to competently complete each step of the surgical abortion procedure.

 

Purpose:

Quality abortion care requires providers to possess the knowledge required to perform each step of a surgical abortion in order to ensure the service is safe and effective. his indicator serves as a proxy for provider observation. *

Justification for Inclusion:

Expert review panel

 

Quality Threshold:

A health facility is considered as meeting this indicator’s quality threshold if 80% or more of providers are found competent in surgical abortion procedures.

  • For health facilities offering surgical abortion: Health Facility Provider Survey questions HF229 to HF232, HF235, and HF237

The proportion of providers who answered with the following response pattern:

  1. Response option 2 for HF229
  2. Response option 2 for HF230a
  3. Response option 2 for HF230b
  4. Response option 1 for HF230c
  5. Response option 2 for HF231a
  6. Response option 1 for HF231b
  7. Response option 2 for HF231c

*While direct provider observation can be a powerful indicator of clinical competence, it is frequently costly and time-consuming. Managers interested in further evaluating technical competence may use findings from this indicator to inform further clinical skills evaluation.
